The uMgenyane conservancy comprises the area surrounding and including Hilton College, Mount Verde, Wedgwood and the northern portion of the Mondi Mountain Homes Estates, and approximately 85 private rural and residential properties in between. It is named after the uMgenyane River, but also includes the Rietspruit River, both of which are in the uMgeni catchment. There are several private nature reserves proclaimed within the conservancy that form the core of the conservation ethic that is evident in the area. Landowners in the conservancy work together to ensure the character and biodiversity of the area are not compromised by illegal activities or inappropriate development.
