Karkloof Conservancy

The Karkloof Conservancy is made up of local farmers, foresters and landowners interested in the protection of our wonderful biodiversity in the Karkloof. We have been actively involved in a number of community projects in the area since the re-establishment of the Karkloof Conservancy on 19 March 1998. Projects include Annual Game Counts, Bird Counts, Alien Invasive Plant Control, regular meetings with guest speakers, land care programmes and meaningful environmental education in our local farm schools. The Karkloof Conservancy covers an area of 40 000 hectares in the Karkloof, KwaZulu-Natal. The area includes wetlands, mistbelt grasslands and huge tracts of mistbelt forest, which are protected biomes. Some of the farmers are registered crane custodians and all 3 species of crane occur in the area - especially the critically endangered Wattled Crane.
